HUMPBACK WHALE #SEAWEDNESDAY

#SEAwednesday is always humpday, but every day is humpday for a Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)! Significant Ecological Areas (SEAs) aren’t just on land – two SEAs, the Malibu Coastline SEA and the Palos Verdes Peninsula and Coastline SEA, extend out into the ocean. These SEAs help protect the marine life that lives in and migrates through these significant ecological areas. Humpback whales are just one of the marine species that depends on these SEA areas. They are endangered, but their numbers have been increasing slowly since ship surveys were begun in 1979. Along with gray whales, humpback whales migrate through these SEAs and depend on these areas as they swim by LA County.

Fun fact: Their scientific name means “large-winged of New England”.
